About Rita Saffioti

Rita Saffioti was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Member for   West Swan in the 2008 State election.

Rita has been a member of the Australian Labor Party since 1996.

Rita grew up on her family’s orchard in Roleystone, south-east of Perth. There she attended the local schools and went on to be awarded Dux of Kelmscott Senior High School.

In 1992 Rita successfully completed her Bachelor of Business degree at Curtin University, majoring in Economics.

Following her graduation, Rita travelled to Canberra where she worked in the Commonwealth Department of Finance as an Economist.

Rita returned to Western Australia in 1995 to take up a position in the Department of Treasury and Finance.

A passionate Fremantle Dockers fan, Rita makes sure she doesn’t miss a game at Subiaco Oval.

In 1997, Rita left her job in the Treasury Department and became the Economics Advisor to the then Leader of the Opposition, Dr Geoff Gallop.

Rita took on a number of roles in the Gallop Government before becoming Chief of Staff to Premier Alan Carpenter in January 2006.

On the 9th of April 2013, Rita was appointed as Shadow Minister for Planning; Finance; Government Accountability; and Women's Interests.

Rita and her husband have three adorable young children.
